    • Frederick Nicholas Herrmann, 93, of Bridgewater, peacefully passed away on Thursday, January 17, 2017, at the Bridgewater Retirement Community.
      Mr. Herrmann was born on August 24, 1923, in Elizabeth New Jersey, to the late Frederick Laurent and Corina Mackers Herrmann. He was also preceded in death by his wife, who passed in 2001, Alice Chisholm Herrmann; a daughter, Gretel L. Allen; and a son-in-law, Dr. David A. Kirby.
      Enlisting in the Army with his Valley Forge Military Academy class, Fred served with The 270th Engineer Combat Battalion HQ during WWII in the Rhineland and Central Europe campaigns. During the last 2 months in theater, Fred led a 3 man squad as a demolitions specialist assigned to Combat Battalion before being severely wounded in Saarbrucken, Germany. After the Army he worked in banking for the US Government in the Panama Canal Zone, later accepting a post as a hospital administrator for the Va. State Penitentiary. He then went on to serve as the Material Manager for Richmond Memorial Hospital for 35 years.
      Fred is survived by his daughter, Corita Kirby; a sister, Adriana Lord and husband, Thomas; five grandchildren, Brian Kirby and wife, Samantha, Douglas Kirby, Lauren Kirby, Olivia Funkhouser and husband, Chad, and Victoria Allen; three great-grandchildren, Gemma Kirby, Daniel Kirby and Addison Funkhouser; and numerous nieces and nephews.
      A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday January 29, 2017, at Bridgewater Retirement Community Campus in the Lantz Chapel.
      The family will receive friends following the service at Maple Terrace, 210 Virginia Ave.
      In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Bridgewater Vol. Rescue Squad, 10 Volunteer Dr. Bridgewater VA., 22812; or the Resident Care Endowment Fund, Bridgewater Health Care Foundation., 302 N. 2nd St. Bridgewater VA., 22812.
